Hi, I'm on Wikipedia because I think improving knowledge is important and would like to see Wikipedia used as a tool for that.
Currently, I am mainly trying to edit pages where I feel it's important that the copy is improved or adding citations. As a new user, I am learning as I go along and have made some mistakes. I put in effort to try and learn from these.
I also sometimes edit pages of personal interest to me. An example of this would be the impersonator page. I recently contributed to this page, by adding a part on Online Impersonation.
Most importantly, I believe Wikipedia should be used as a force for good.
I have an interest in human rights and believe that all humans should be treated with the respect they deserve. For example, a person should be able to get a correct death certificate for their late relative, without experiencing harassment in the process. They should be able to obtain a renewal passport, without the government wrongly providing a braille one, when they are not blind, without harassment. Educational qualifications should not be taken away from them, decades later, without proper justification.
With power comes responsibility and that shouldn't be misused. The legal system in a country should be available to every citizen. There is a correct way of dealing with crime, but ultimately if that fails, a person has a duty to protect themselves, their property and their loved ones.
Not so long ago, I lost a sibling and parent, that in my opinion should not have died, so am relatively recently bereaved. Please go gently with me as I learn! In fact most of my stresses seem to come in pairs, so please forgive my dislike for repetitive copy and pairs.
Disclosure: During 2010, I had an account and made some edits, that were not impartial, as I worked for a business that owned other companies. I have since made edits to pages (Winsor & Newton and Reeves) and have fully disclosed this. This was based on a lack of experience in how Wikipedia should be edited and what required disclosure.
Comments were left by someone else, which I discovered many years later. Unfortunately, I was not able to access that account again, due to the email provider not allowing me to recover my account. This is the only Wikipedia account I now have access to.
Despite the fact I had zero information on that account that would allow a broad audience to identify me, I have no doubt I have suffered harassment as a result of this mistake. Including, but not limited to, multiple acts which I consider to be assault and were reported to the relevant authorities. Some of this has even been relevant to content on Wikipedia pages.
Much of this has been quite serious, has occurred in real life and it is not something anyone on Wikipedia should have to tolerate. Similarly, I have been subject to online harassment so am now very cautious in regards to who I interact with and have removed myself from social media entirely. No mistake justifies such behaviour. It is in part due to that I have an interest in trying to edit certain pages.
